George F. Thoma served in the Navy and was a member of the Artie Shaw Navy Band, which was the first band of its kind to be sanctiond by the US Navy. The band toured various areas of the South Pacific during 1943. In 1944, Shaw was discharged due to health reasons and Sam Donahue took over leadership of the band. From the description of George F.
